125 years of Bosch – Invented for life
From technology pioneer to successful global player 2011 sees the 150th anniversary of company founder Robert Bosch’s birth. In 2011, the Bosch Group is celebrating its 125th anniversary, as well as the 150th anniversary of its founder’s birth. On November 15, 1886, Bosch established his “Workshop for Precision Mechanics and Electrical Engineering” in Stuttgart, laying the foundations for what has since become a leading global supplier of technology and services. Born on September 23, 1861, in Albeck near Ulm, Robert Bosch was a technology pioneer who propelled his company to international success during his own lifetime. Robert Bosch died in Stuttgart on March 12, 1942, aged 80.
Bosch does business through more than 300 subsidiaries and regional companies in over 60 countries, and has a workforce of a good 280,000 associates worldwide. An international network of sales companies and partners spans some 150 countries, ensuring that the company's products and services will continue to feature in important growth markets in the future.
“Our customers, as well as everyone who has ever used Bosch products, have also played a role in the company’s 125-year success story,” says Franz Fehrenbach, the chairman of the Bosch board of management.
Hermann Scholl, the chairman of the shareholders meeting and of the supervisory council, agrees, and adds: “Many of our pioneering technological achievements were the result of our fruitful interaction with our customers. And a spirit of innovation pervades our company to this day – an unceasing search for new areas of business, markets, and technologies.”
Anniversary activities reflect the company’s past, present, and future
For the Bosch Group, the double anniversary will be the dominant event of 2011. Through numerous activities around the world, including some 200 events for associates, the company will be celebrating its two anniversaries over the course of this year. The first of these activities is the interactive anniversary website, which is now online. At www.125.bosch.com, everything revolves around the “BoschGlobe,” which encourages visitors to explore and take part. In this multimedia Bosch world, visitors can embark on a journey through time, where they will experience not only the company’s history but also the new technologies of the present day. And if they turn the globe toward the future, they can leave their own mark on the map in the form of ideas and wishes. “In the anniversary year, we want to trace an arc from our origins to the future. To achieve this, we have prepared many activities for our customers, business partners, and associates,” says Uta-Micaela Dürig. As senior vice-president of corporate communications at Bosch, she is responsible for coordinating all activities worldwide in the anniversary year.
Robert Bosch. Visionary entrepreneur, dedicated freethinker, and social reformer. But above all, a personality who never stood for quick profit. The company founder always believed that the success of a business lies in the business partners’ trust and product quality. “Sell the best of the best” was his motto. With this deceptively simple maxim, Robert Bosch established values that still apply today – not just in Germany, but worldwide in every single production location.
Robert Bosch recognised the potential of globalisation early on, and succeeded in leading a small workshop from Swabia, Germany, to become a global group. Internationality is the company’s strength, with cultural variety being one of the pillars of the Bosch values. Bosch supports its origins, while at the same time believing diversity to be a real gain for the company. As a global group, Bosch produces goods worldwide, and demand for quality is equally high in every location.
The Bosch idea of quality goes beyond mere product quality: It reflects corporate identity in which social and ecological considerations are aligned with the Bosch demand for quality and their economic goals.
It all starts with the production technologies and processes: Bosch synchronises these internationally so that they are interchangeable worldwide. Even when selecting materials, they leave nothing to chance – their quality is defined internationally, and they only buy products that meet strict criteria. Bosch also recognise the value of having highly-trained, motivated employees. Systematic employee development and qualification are therefore a focus of the personnel policy. Bosch colleagues can develop their skills continuously in individually-tailored training programs. The result: high Bosch quality worldwide.
Certified and tested
Bosch as a company is certified in accordance with various international industry norms. Two examples: ISO 14001 is a standard for environment management systems, allowing quality standards in the environmental protection area to be compared internationally. The certification of the quality management system in accordance with ISO 9001 sets out comprehensive measures, defining all the processes within the company clearly. This enables Bosch to achieve the level of quality that their customers expect.
Throughout his life, Robert Bosch supported public welfare and justice with personal commitment and financial means, a tradition the company continues today. In each production location, Bosch aligns itself with the core working norms of the International Labor Organisation (ILO). They respect and support internationally-recognised human rights, and safeguard the equal opportunities of all employees.

Some important developments for BoschBosch and Hirschmann cooperate in Video over IP
Bosch Security Systems has signed with Hirschmann Automation and Control GmbH, a framework agreement for the purchase of network components for Industrial Ethernet. Bosch will use the infrastructure components in video surveillance projects in the grounds and in stations or factories where harsh environmental conditions prevail. The components of Hirschmann offer ideal conditions for such operations; they can be called on a DIN rail mount to support copper and fiber and can be operated with an operating voltage of 24 volts. This extended temperature range and its tolerance to high humidity, the network components are also suitable for use in demanding outdoor applications. Moreover, the protection classes IP67 for particularly harsh environmental conditions and IP68 available for underwater use. With this partnership, customers can now benefit from Bosch in outdoor and industrial environments, the convergence of networks for data communications and security technology. This makes the communication infrastructure in the company greatly simplified and it results in considerable savings in installation, operation and use of safety solutions.
New storage systems in the video surveillance technology
Bosch Security Systems and NetApp Inc. (Network Appliance Inc.) are headquartered in Sunnyvale, California entered into a partnership. Under this Agreement, the Bosch NetApp storage devices that are equipped with two brand names, sell and wait. Bosch Security Systems is a global organisation for security and communication systems, NetApp is a leading manufacturer of innovative solutions for data storage and data management. With the agreement, the partner companies positioned for continuously accelerating rate of development of the market for IP video surveillance.
"Structures and benefits of IP video systems are being used more frequently. This is reflected in the sustained acceptance of the Bosch technology for video recordings in which the video data directly to RAID systems (redundant array of independent disks) or in a SAN (storage area be directed network) and no network video recorders are necessary, "said Johan Jubbega, Vice President of Global Video Systems and Products, Bosch Security Systems. "The partnership with NetApp strengthens our offer contact with proven storage technologies from a leading vendor's products are system integrators and our newest group of customers. Users with excellentIT skills. "
Axis, Bosch and Sony cooperate to standardise the interface of network video products
Bosch Security Systems was one of the founding members together with Axis Communications and Sony Corporation of the ONVIF Open Network Video Interface alliance, set up to establish a global interface standard for IP-based network video products. The alliance’s aim has been to standardise communication to ensure interoperability between network video products from different vendors.
More than 710 video products from nearly 290 manufacturers now use this interface and are available in the market for system integrators, distributors and end-users. This shows that, for the security industry, the ONVIF specification is without doubt the preferred interface.
From Bosch, the range of ONVIF compatible products now includes products such as the Dinion 2X, Flexidome 2X and AutoDome cameras. We also provide comprehensive updates of the firmware for our IP video platform, including the Dinion IP, FlexiDome IP, extreme series IP and AutoDome IP cameras, as well as for our VideoJet X series encoders and our VIP X1600 multi-channel encoders and decoders.
