Good looking data and security protection for east London

Flexible conduit from Flexicon is protecting vital cabling to CCTV cameras and Customer Information Systems for new and refurbished rail stations in the £1bn London Overground East London line.

The stations all feature the latest CCTV systems for enhanced security, state of the art audio visual customer communication help points and oyster card acceptance machines. The flexible conduit is also protecting cabling for the stations’ LAN, access control and telephones.

Phase 1 of the new line is due for completion this summer with phase two scheduled for completion next year. The conduit provides protection against water and dust ingress, vandalism, and meets Section 12 standard requirements regarding fire safety performance of materials within Transport for London’s underground stations.

Where conduit is ‘passenger facing’, contractors Balfour Beatty specified the company’s LFHUBRD system, which has a stainless steel overbraid, for aesthetics as well as protection. This has high abrasion resistance and mechanical strength to prevent it being cut or pulled out. It is also highly flexible and has an Ingres Protection rating of up to IP65.

For conduit that is not ‘passenger facing’ the contractors have used the non over-braided type LFHU system. This galvanised steel conduit is LFH coated and provides high mechanical strength and flexibility with an Ingress Protection rating of up to IP65.

Says Steve Harris, project manager for Balfour Beatty: “The East London Line is a major investment in infrastructure. With so much of the latest communication and security technology being installed, it is vital to protect the power and data cabling associated with this to ensure public safety and convenience, while meeting the standards.”
